The 'gel polish ban' has sparked a frenzy, but I remain unbothered. Here's why.
The ban targets trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), an ingredient in gel polish, due to potential fertility issues in animals. However, this doesn't mean the end of my fortnightly manicures.
Firstly, TPO-free gel polishes already exist and will become the norm. The long-lasting, high-shine look of gel polish isn't compromised without TPO. Secondly, even if your salon uses products with TPO, the risk is minimal. The amount of TPO in nail products is a thousand times less than what could cause harm, and it's applied to the nail, not absorbed into the body.
This panic reminds me of a similar scare about UV lights a few years ago. The amount of time our hands spend under the lamp is negligible. Experts like Mohammed Kanadil and Helena Biggs assure us that TPO-containing products are safe when used correctly.
If you're still concerned, ask your salon about their products and check the ingredients list for TPO. But remember, the ban doesn't ban TPO polish entirely, and salons can use existing stocks until 2027.
In my opinion, this ban is an overreaction. The potential risks are minimal, and the panic is unnecessary. But if you're worried, take a deep breath, ask questions, and enjoy your gel manicures without fear.
